From Nachi fall, after a few hours on train, along the coast, I arrive at Shirahama city: literally the white beach. At the station, I rent a car. My first stop is Engetsu island. It is a big rock erected close to the seafront with a hole in the middle that makes it look like an arch. The weather is splendid and the heat at its maximum. It feels like a summer day and not the beginning of autumn. I walk a while along the coast observing the island from different angles. I take the car back to go to my second destination: the white sand beach that gave its name to the city. It’s love at first sight. Without thinking I wear my swim shorts and start playing in the waves: pure happiness. It’s like being on the beach in Waikiki. No need to flight hours to find paradise. In summer this beach is crowded and it is impossible to find a place to lay your towel. At least that’s what the locals say. But we are already off-season so there are very few people on the beach. Lucky me when I think it’s Sunday! Once finished swimming, I drive towards the final palace I wanted to see: the Toretore village. It is actually a hotel made of small individual bungalows that look just like Barbapapa’s houses. A few pictures later, I’m back at the station to take the train to Osaka.
