The temple is located at the west of the island near the sea. Fusaki Kannondo was founded in the 18th century when members of the government offered a statue of Kannon to ensure the safety of ships sailing near the coast. The temple is always very quiet and a great place to meditate except maybe on New Year’s day when many people gather to take part in the celebrations. Kannon is a Buddhist deity who grants health and safety to voyagers. There are few temples in Okinawa Prefecture in comparison to other Japanese prefectures, there are indeed numerous indigenous beliefs persisting alongside Buddhism and Shintoism.
