For more than 15 years I dreamed of that moment. My first experience of Yabusame was in Kamakura in April 2014, but I arrived very late at the Shinto temple and I saw almost nothing since there were so many people in front of me. Despite this, it made me a very strong impression and I promised myself to return as soon as possible, but this time to go very early to be in the forefront.
Yabusame is in my opinion one of the finest expressions of Japanese martial arts. To practice it you must be a very good rider and a great archer. These events are relatively rare. In Tokyo you can see it in October and in Kamakura in April, these events are usually associated with a Shinto temple. Reality has surpassed what I had imagined. Two things really impressed me: the gorgeous costumes and the speed with which the rider pass in front of the targets. In less than 30 seconds the archer passes the 3 targets and at each passage, the tension is palpable in the assembly…
